CHAMPS History

The CHAMPS Oncology Story

For 33 years, the staff of CHAMPS Oncology has been working towards a higher quality of cancer registry data and a more educated and skilled cancer registry profession. Prior to 2001, CHAMPS Oncology was known as the Northern Ohio Cancer Resource Center (NOCRC), a service of The Center for Health Affairs, the leading advocate for Northeast Ohio hospitals. NOCRC was the population based cancer registry for Cuyahoga County, providing outcome data to the community and member hospitals.

In 2000, the CHAMPS Healthcare Board of Trustees took action to transition this program from a population-based regional cancer registry to serve healthcare beyond Northeast Ohio hospitals. And today, CHAMPS Oncology serves a wide array of healthcare clients in 15 states.

What was once a population-based cancer registry for Cuyahoga County is now a leader in the future development of the oncology data field. Managed by Toni Hare, RHIT, CTR, Vice President, one of 29 nationally recognized Commission on Cancer-trained Consultants, CHAMPS Oncology is proud of its history and its ongoing mission to serve as partners in the war on cancer.
